Walter Mathieu and Cub Koda passed away the same day. Two characters who both entertained those whose lives they directly and indirectly touched. I can’t speak much about Mathieu except there was never a time I viewed him doing what he did best the art of entertaining and he always accomplished that.Cub on the other hand was a dear friend. We started as business associates but it wasn’t long before we crossed that line. I am not one who can sit for hours and listen to stories but Cub had that unique talent of captivating your attention and giving it back when he was through. It is difficult to write this as It has only been a few hours but as I can’t shake his memory from my mind for my selfish reasons I write these words. What do I most remember about the man. I truly think it is that fighter instinct for survival. Though physically he was a short individual he stood tall when he took on life. Perseverance was his calling card and when most would have quit, he confronted and fought like hell. Many when dealt the hand he was would have quit saying it’s just not worth it. Though his true talent was never realized by as many as should have he always felt he was granted the wealth. See, Cub was smarter then most. He knew living was the greatest reward for the essence of his being. Mind you he would not have shunned millions had it come his way but somewhere while still creating great music he was able to put life in perspective. Fame, wealth and glory would all be fine but he knew they were nothing if there was no substance to the essence of his being. The lives that he touched he left better. Cub will be remembered for the song of defiance he penned so long ago and truly it is timeless. Sadly most never got to know the Cub I was fortunate to get to know. That Cub was thankful for all the things life usually takes for granted such as a wonderful wife, a step son he was extremely proud of, a close family and his friends. That was his source of energy as he approached his life and the love of his art is rivaled by none. So as life has taken a friend who I will miss dearly, I will carry with me that spirit of putting up a good fight taking out of life the important things and always being grateful that I still can. God acquired a hell of a guitar player, songwriter and most important a special person for his band. Peace out Cub!!! Thanks for being in life. -Rudy Szlavi |
